Animal Management

Buying, owning and keeping animals is one thing, enjoying them and dealing with them is another.

To care for docile animals is easy. That is why I spend so much time with the young animals- so that they develop a deep gentle relationship to humans.

My animals get a halter when they are about five or six months old. When attaching the halter, one can recognize the charachter of the animal and its trust in humans. If attaching the halter sholud fail, well there are other days...!

Once a calf has a halter, it is easy to play around with it and to tug on the halter occasionally. If there is any kind of resistance, it is time to refrain. I practice this until it si natural for the calf and cow to be harnessed. Patience and stamina are fundamental for the keeper an animal.

When the calves can be led on the halter and not on the nose ring then you made it. Herd management is easier to practice when the animals are docile and tame. In my opinion, it is good when young animals have to take a subordinate role- later they will be easier to handel.

The cow are bred between two and two and a half years and then come to the main herd. Artificial insemination is only of secondary interest as we have two great breeding animals.

Breeding is no problem with functioning herd management!
